Directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2), Atomic Blonde stars Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Til Schweiger, Eddie Marsan, Sofia Boutella, and Toby Jones. The story centralizes around on the eve of the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the shifting of superpower alliances, Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron), a top-level spy for MI6, is dispatched to Berlin to take down a ruthless espionage ring that has just killed an undercover agent for reasons unknown. She is ordered to cooperate with Berlin station chief David Percival (James McAvoy), and the two form an uneasy alliance, unleashing their full arsenal of skills in pursuing a threat that jeopardizes the West’s entire intelligence operation. It wasn’t exactly the movie it’s advertised to be, and I think that’s going to disappoint a lot of people interested in 80s-John-Wick-with-a-woman.
That aside, it’s a solid, enjoyable, noir movie that put a lot of emphasis on telling a mildly interesting story as hip and cool as possible. At its core, it’s a basic spy noir, through and through, storywise. There’s a McGuffin to track down, a peek at the seedy world beneath the world and lots of people acting like they’re two steps ahead of the audience. This isn’t bad, I would just level-set your expectations as far as the plot. I think what sets it apart a bit is that it all takes place just as the Berlin Wall is about to be torn down, begging the question “what’s all this for??” An answer is given and I think audiences will be split in whether that answer is satisfactory.
On top of this is just a lot of cool. The characters are cool and James McAvoy steals the show but Charlize Theron is such an awesome actress and she’s been killing it in her action roles, she definitely should get cast as Catwoman *cough* come on DC *cough* and The music is catchy as hell and the songs they chose, have been playing in my head since last night. The way people smoke, talk and move transport me to the late 80s. The cinematography is breathtaking, I love that this movie is set in Germany and other locations in Europe. The action scenes are really well done especially the one take of the staircase fight (my favorite scene in the movie).
I couldn’t help but think that if Charlize sported a red wig and there were MCU references peppered in, and the McGuffin was an Infinity Stone, this could have easily been the Black Widow movie everyone’s been asking for since 2010. Overall, Atomic Blonde may not deserve the title as Joan Wick but Charlize Theron kicks a lot of butt as Lorraine and the action scenes, while a bit spoiled in the trailers are done so well. Check it out in theaters July 28th!
